Is Your Computer Infected?

Most of us think that the threat of the Conficker virus is over but the truth is, according to some sources, it could still be infecting over 10 million computers out there. Some even say it is waiting for new commands to become active again. Other media sources have reported that there is a rumor of a criminal organization that has infected millions of home computers with a small remote control application called a "bot" that could allow them to take control of all these computers at once and use them to take down giant websites like Google and Amazon. What is the average home computer user to do to prevent things like this? Here are a few suggestions:

1. Make sure to update your computer using Windows Update. If you click on the START button and then click on ALL PROGRAMS and scan the list that pops up, you should see a line called WINDOWS UPDATE. Click on this. It will go to the Microsoft website and download the patches that fix the security holes that these bad programs use to get in or out. You should be updating your computer at least once a month.

2. Get an antivirus program and make sure it is being updated often. There are the big guys like Norton and McAfee and there are also FREE guys out there like AVG, Avast and Avira that work well too. No matter what you use, make sure it is being updated often, at least once a week and make sure you are running a scan of your computer. If you are not updating, you are not safe against the newer security threats and if you don't scan, you will not find all of them.

3. Get a second layer of protection. There is a free program out there called Malwarebytes that fills the holes and finds the bugs that regular antivirus does not. It is designed to work WITH and antivirus program and help it to really give you that extra piece of security. It is FREE and can easily be found on the internet.

4. Turn your computer off at night. If you are not using your computer, turn it off. No one can get into your computer if it is turned off.
